Guest Lecturer

Hi! Excited to share my recent experience as a Guest Lecturer at Universitas Pamulang, courtesy of the Praktisi Mengajar program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

Despite the brief two-month duration, as a PM in the IT industry, the opportunity to step into academia was an adventure I couldn’t resist.

My experience in teaching Lexicography goes beyond dictionaries; it’s a blend of theory and hands-on experience. The students were really involved, asking questions, and showing interest in the tools and methods.

During my Master’s program in Lexicography a few years ago, I discovered a gap in corpus linguistic tools specifically for Indonesian text. This led to the development of SemanText, which I built using Python on the Streamlit framework and incorporating libraries such as Pandas, Stanza, Newspaper3k, etc.

From scraping articles to extracting most common words, exploring n-grams, and uncovering collocations, SemanText covered it all. We also observed how a word is used in different sentences with the Key Words in Context / Concordance feature.

In the final course, students collaborated to explore topics like Palestine-Israel and Climate Change. They compiled corpora, extracted n-grams and collocations, understood how words are used in sentences, and created dictionary entries—without the need for coding, thanks to SemanText.

I still vividly recall my initial encounter with Python back in my third semester of the Master’s program at the University of Minho (Portugal) in 2018, where I opted for the Introduction to Natural Language Processing as an elective course. Fast forward to the present, and I not only incorporate Python into my work but have also crafted a tool using it.

In conclusion, I express profound gratitude for the enriching experience of being a guest lecturer. I am also thankful for the support of Pacmann a company that continues to be a catalyst for growth and learning in my professional journey, and Keni Pradianti who opened up the opportunity.
